Commendation Award For the apprehension of two robbery suspects and the recovery of $750,000 in jewelry taken in an armed robbery of a local jewelry business. This arrest also cleared numerous other armed robberies of jewelry stores in Maryland and Virginia

Sheriff Johnson, who has a Criminal Justice degree from Anne Arundel Community College, was a twenty-two year veteran with the Anne Arundel County Police Department. He held the rank of Sergeant and was Commander of the Armed Robbery Unit and Hostage Negotiation Team within the Criminal Investigation Division. During his career with the Police Department, he served in both administrative and field operations capacities.

Sheriff Johnson was first elected Sheriff of Anne Arundel County in December of 1994 and was reelected for a second term in December of 1998.

In September 1999, Sheriff Johnson graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. That same month, he was also sworn in as President of the Maryland Sheriffs' Association.
